The Blood Bank’s MISSION is: to offer our patients excellent quality and safe blood components by means of opportune and efficient care, provided by an ethical and highly qualified human team.
The Blood Bank’s VISION is: through the compliment with the norms and the continuous improvement in technology, to obtain an operative excellence as well as a high quality in the blood products offered.
The Blood Bank has an activity related to healthcare and performs duties such as recollection, analysis, processing, and storage of the blood components.
The Blood Bank is organized as follows:
Care area and donor selection
Blood processing and immunohematology laboratory
Serological test laboratory
Apheresis area
Patient care area
At the blood processing laboratory we prepare the following components: total blood, red blood cells, standard platelets, and fresh and cryoprecipitated plasma. All of the components are then transfused already leukoreduced.
The Apheresis area has two platelet recollection machines and one for recollecting embryonic stem cells, plasmapheresis, and lymphopheresis.
The serological testing lab is equipped for amplified chemiluminescence, the most advanced technology available today for blood banks, for the detection of: HIV type 1 and 2 antibodies, antibodies against the Hepatitis C virus, surface antigen as well as antibodies against the Core antigen in Hepatitis B.
The antibodies against Chagas disease, against HTLV types I and II, and treponemics are processed by traditional platforms such as ELISA and RPR, respectively. Our blood bank scrutinizes this area for the five infectious markers, plus two other recommended ones that are not compulsory, thus providing blood and hemoderivates of the highest quality, technological, and secure standards in Colombia. As it is widely known, the XXth century was the century of productivity and the XXIst century is the century of quality. For such reason, we have developed our own quality system in our service, based on the PAHIO – WHO Guide 7.1, with the final goal or preventing errors, improving processes, and controlling our performance.
